The Watermill Bookshop
The Watermill is a unique development, bringing together the largest bookshop in the rural Highlands, contemporary art gallery, music and coffee shop. All this is located in a stunning Grade-A listed former watermill set in Aberfeldy in the beautiful Perthshire Highlands.
The Watermill was opened by Michael Palin in May 2005. Not long after opening The Watermill was awarded Four Star visitor attraction status and we were only one per cent off a coveted five star rating.
In May 2006 we won the award for Scottish Independent Bookshop of the Year. In November 2006 the conversion of The Watermill was runner up to the multi-million pound Perth Concert Hall in the Dundee Institute of Architects Commercial Building Awards.
If you are travelling to or through the Highlands, The Watermill is a ‘must visit’. If you live in Glasgow or Edinburgh, we are within 90 minutes’ drive.
We are open seven days a week (except December 25 & 26 and January 1), 10am – 5pm Monday – Saturday, 12noon – 5pm Sunday.

Harry Potter – Midnight July 21st – Order Now!On July 21st we will be open from one minute past midnight for the publication of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. We will be having a bit of a party from midnight until about 12.30am so why not dress up as a character or bring a hedgwig?
We will be selling Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows for £11.99 – that’s £6 off the publisher’s price. It might be a bit cheaper in a supermarket or at online shops, but unlike them we organise activities around children’s literature all year-round including the recent Watermill Children’s Book Festival and our children’s reading groups. We can only afford to do these things with your support. We ask that you order Harry Potter from your local independent bookshop and encourage your friends to do so!
Best Bookshop says The Scotsman
“Stunning conversion of watermill and voted Scotland’s best independent bookshop last May…The largest bookshop in the rural Highlands (with 5,000 titles), it also has an excellent selection of children’s books. Staff hold five children’s reading groups each Saturday…Put all of that alongside the top-floor art gallery, the excellent range of Scottish interest books, the coffee shop, the spaciousness of the building and the plentiful supply of seats for casual browsers and you’ll realise why owner Kevin Ramage isn’t running scared of the internet.” David Robinson, The Scotsman, 17 April 2007
