Rafting Rivers of the World- Maine USA

Dead River Rafting- Drop Dead Gorgeous!

Dead River of the Maine valley is blessed with a continuous flow of whitewater and contains a higher frequency of whitewater rapids than most other rivers of the East. Rapids along the 16 mile stretch of the journey get more dodgy and exciting every moment. The action level for these exotica is set at Class III-V and are thus, not recommended for people below 15.

Grand Falls, a thirty-foot horseshoe waterfall, straddles the river and forms the prelude to a thrilling day. The initial stretches are easy to sail through, but the real fun starts with the steeper descents. The Spencer Rips, The Minefield, Humpty Dumpty, Elephant Rock, Mile Long Rapids, Hayden’s Landing and Poplar Hill Falls belong to the Class III-V rapids and chill rafters to the very core.

The best time for thrill seekers to raft the waters is from May to September when scheduled releases flood the Dead River with 5,500-7,000 cubic feet per second of white waters. The rush for bookings in this period increases dramatically and it is advisable for you not to be the last one to opt for it. The technical version of whitewater rafting appears in the gentler summer months. This period is great for big groups and families. The month of September adds beauty to the adventure with a breathtaking view of local flora and foliage.

The trip concludes in the town of The Forks where the Kennebec meets the Dead River. Most outfitters arrange for a grand lunch at The Forks as a fitting tribute to a memorable day.
