The Colorado River in Utah offers the best whitewaters to raft along with magnificent wildlife and interesting geological sites strewn around. Cataract and Westwater Canyons are the most popular trails among rafters.
The Cataract Canyon is thrill at its very best. Most of the trail passes through the Canyonlands National Park and the scenery is just awesome. The initial stretches are gentle and the trails are filled with American Indian petroglyphs. Enjoy the beautiful hues of the canyon while heading towards the deadlier confluence of the Green and the Colorado River! Here, the river picks up tremendous speed and the rapids belong to the class III -V category. Mile Long Rapid, Ben Hurt and several other rapids follow in quick succession. Big Drops elevate the adventure with a series of terrific rapids and is considered to be the best among the lot. Twenty Eight rapids with a steep gradient of 80 feet per mile captivate the senses of the rafters. Primeval Anasazi remains, grottos and waterfalls add to the fun factor of the ride. The minimum age for rafting is 8 years in the Cataract and 12 years in the high waters. The Westwater trip is considered to be “the West’s Best Short Whitewater Trip” by the National Geographic magazine. The initial stretches of the Westwater rafting trip through the Ruby canyon follow a mellow course along picturesque canyon walls painted in amber, black and crimson hues. The canyon walls ascend to a height of 200 feet and river squeezed between them creates unforgettable rapids like the Class IV Skull Rapid. Funnel Falls and Sock-it-to-me rapids offer the final fuel to rafters before the trip ends. The entire course of the river is interposed with mystifying ancient Indian ruins and petroglyphs. Wildlife is rich in this magnificent landscape and bald eagles, snowy egrets and great blue herons are common sight here.
